Sentences are identified by terminal punctuation — periods (.), question marks (?), and exclamation marks (!). Abbreviations with periods (e.g., “Dr.”, “U.S.A.”) are handled with common abbreviation detection to avoid false splits. Ellipses (…) are treated as a single terminal mark.
Average sentence length is one of the inputs to readability formulas like Flesch-Kincaid. Long average sentence length (above 20 words) correlates with lower readability scores and harder-to-process text. Most readability guides recommend an average of 15–20 words per sentence for general web content. The sentence counter helps you see where you stand and identify which specific sentences are pulling the average up.
