Common questions

Flexbox (Flexible Box Layout) is a CSS layout model that distributes space and aligns items within a container along a single axis – either horizontally (row) or vertically (column). It solves common layout problems like centering elements, distributing space evenly between items, and building responsive single-direction layouts without floats or positioning hacks. It is one of the two primary CSS layout systems alongside CSS Grid.
Use Flexbox for one-dimensional layouts – a row of navigation links, a row of cards, a centered content block, a toolbar. Use CSS Grid for two-dimensional layouts – full page templates, grid-based galleries, or any layout where you are controlling both rows and columns simultaneously. In practice, most UIs use both: Grid for the overall page structure, Flexbox for component-level alignment.
justify-content controls alignment along the main axis – the direction flex items flow (horizontal for row, vertical for column). align-items controls alignment on the cross axis – perpendicular to the main axis. For a row direction: justify-content positions items left, right, or center horizontally; align-items positions them top, middle, or bottom vertically.
flex-grow only distributes available free space. If the flex container has no extra space (because items already fill it or the container has no defined size), flex-grow has nothing to distribute. Make sure the container has an explicit width or height, or is set to display: flex with room to grow. Also check that flex-shrink is not overriding your expectations on the other direction.
