FAQ
Common questions
Characters with spaces counts every character including blank spaces — the raw length of the string. Characters without spaces counts only visible characters — letters, numbers, and punctuation. Most social platforms and ad systems use characters with spaces for their limits.
Twitter/X posts: 280 characters. Google Ads headlines: 30 characters, descriptions: 90 characters. Meta title tags: roughly 600px width (approximately 60 characters). Meta descriptions: approximately 155–160 characters. LinkedIn posts: 3,000 characters. Instagram captions: 2,200 characters (though only the first 125 show before “more”).
Emojis count as multiple characters in some contexts — a single emoji may be 2 bytes in UTF-16 encoding, which is how Twitter counts characters. The byte counter on this tool shows both the visual character count and byte size so you can check both.
No. All character counting runs locally in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored anywhere.

About the Character Counter
Character limits govern almost everything written for digital channels — ad copy, social posts, email subject lines, meta tags, app store descriptions, and SMS messages all have specific constraints. Going over the limit means truncated text in search results, rejected ad submissions, and cut-off captions. This counter tracks character counts in real time against the limits that matter most, so you know exactly where you stand without needing to submit and get rejected or manually count characters.
Benefits
- Live character count — updates with every keystroke, no need to click count.
- Platform limit bars — visual indicators for Twitter, Google Ads, and meta tags built in.
- Characters with and without spaces — both counts shown simultaneously.
- Byte size counter — useful for SMS limits and encoding-sensitive content.
Privacy
All counting runs in your browser. Text is never transmitted to or stored on any server.
