Calculate tax amounts — add or remove any tax rate from a price, work out the pre-tax or post-tax figure from either direction, and calculate effective tax amounts.
Tax Calculator · supports tax inclusive and exclusive calculations · VAT and GST compliant
Add tax to a price (net → gross), remove tax from a price (gross → net), or find the tax amount from a gross figure.
Set the pre-tax or post-tax price and enter the applicable tax rate percentage.
Net price, tax amount, and gross price (tax-inclusive) are all displayed clearly.
Adding tax: multiply the net price by (1 + rate/100). A £100 price with 20% tax → £120. Removing tax (reverse calculation): divide the gross price by (1 + rate/100). A £120 price with 20% tax included → net price = 120 ÷ 1.20 = £100. The common mistake is subtracting 20% of the gross price (£120 × 0.20 = £24, leaving £96) — that’s incorrect.
Yes. GST and VAT are both percentage-based consumption taxes applied the same way — enter the rate applicable to your region (18% for standard Indian GST, 20% for UK VAT, 15% for UAE VAT, etc.). For split-rate tax structures, calculate each rate separately.
For multi-item tax calculations at different rates, use the Invoice Generator which handles line-item tax. This calculator handles one price and one tax rate at a time — useful for quick individual calculations.

Tax calculations appear straightforward but the reverse direction (extracting the pre-tax amount from a tax-inclusive price) is frequently done incorrectly — subtracting the tax rate percentage from the gross amount gives the wrong answer. This calculator handles both directions correctly: add tax to a net price or extract the net price from a tax-inclusive amount. It works for any percentage-based tax — VAT, GST, sales tax, or any other consumption tax — and shows the full breakdown of net amount, tax amount, and gross amount so the calculation is transparent.
