FAQ
Common questions

The mean is the arithmetic average (sum ÷ count). The median is the middle value when the dataset is sorted — the value where half the data is above and half below. The mode is the most frequently occurring value. For symmetric distributions, all three are similar. For skewed distributions with outliers, the median is often a more representative measure than the mean.

Standard deviation measures how spread out the values are from the mean. A low standard deviation means values cluster close to the mean; a high one means they’re widely spread. This calculator provides both population standard deviation (σ) and sample standard deviation (s), which differ in their denominator (N vs. N−1). Use sample standard deviation when your data is a sample from a larger population.

Quartiles divide a sorted dataset into four equal parts: Q1 (25th percentile), Q2 (50th percentile, the median), and Q3 (75th percentile). The interquartile range (IQR = Q3 − Q1) represents the spread of the middle 50% of the data. It’s more robust to outliers than the full range.

About the Statistics Calculator

Descriptive statistics summarise a dataset’s central tendency, spread, and shape — and computing them correctly requires attention to which formula variant applies (population vs. sample standard deviation, different quartile algorithms). This calculator handles a complete set of descriptive statistics in one operation: paste a dataset of any size, and get mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation (both population and sample), sum, count, minimum, maximum, quartiles, IQR, and a distribution summary simultaneously. It’s used by students, analysts, and researchers who need quick reference statistics without opening a spreadsheet application.
