How it works

Estimate your body fat in three steps

Choose your method

Select either the U.S. Navy Method (uses neck, waist, and hip circumference measurements) or the BMI-based estimation method if you have your BMI or body weight and height available.

Enter your measurements

Provide the required body measurements in centimetres or inches. The Navy Method requires a flexible tape measure taken at specific anatomical landmarks for the best accuracy.

Get your body fat estimate

The calculator returns your estimated body fat percentage and classifies it against standard ranges (essential fat, athlete, fitness, acceptable, obese) based on your sex.

FAQ

Common questions about body fat percentage

How is body fat percentage estimated without special equipment?
Several circumference-based formulas estimate body fat using only a tape measure. The U.S. Navy Method uses neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements to estimate body fat through a logarithmic formula validated by the U.S. military. BMI-based body fat formulas use the statistical relationship between BMI, age, and sex to approximate a body fat figure. Both approaches are useful screening tools but are less accurate than laboratory methods such as DEXA scanning, hydrostatic weighing, or air displacement plethysmography.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Recommended body fat ranges differ by sex and are broadly categorised as follows. For men: essential fat 2u20135%, athlete 6u201313%, fitness 14u201317%, acceptable 18u201324%, obese 25% and above. For women: essential fat 10u201313%, athlete 14u201320%, fitness 21u201324%, acceptable 25u201331%, obese 32% and above. These ranges are widely referenced but not universally agreed upon across all health organisations. Body fat also increases naturally with age even without lifestyle changes, so age is a relevant factor when interpreting results.

Why might my body fat result seem inaccurate?
Circumference-based methods have a margin of error of roughly 3u20135 percentage points compared to laboratory-grade measurements. Measurement technique matters significantly u2014 taking circumference readings at slightly incorrect positions on the body can produce noticeably different results. Body fat distribution also affects accuracy: people who carry more fat in the limbs rather than the waist may see underestimated results from the Navy Method. These tools are best used as a relative benchmark to track change over time rather than as precise absolute figures.

Is body fat percentage more useful than BMI?
Body fat percentage and BMI measure different things and both have limitations worth understanding. BMI requires only height and weight and is quick to calculate, but it cannot distinguish between fat and muscle u2014 a limitation that significantly affects athletes and muscular individuals. Body fat percentage is a more direct measure of fat mass but varies in accuracy depending on the method used. Neither figure alone provides a complete health picture. Combining multiple indicators u2014 including waist circumference, physical fitness measures, and blood biomarkers u2014 gives a more meaningful assessment.

About the Body Fat Percentage Calculator

The Body Fat Percentage Calculator estimates the proportion of total body weight composed of fat tissue, using either circumference measurements or BMI data as inputs. It is used by fitness professionals, athletes, and health-conscious individuals who want a more nuanced measure of body composition than weight or BMI alone provides. The tool supports two estimation methods to suit different levels of data availability and user preference.
